Next.js 15: Top 5 Features You Should Start Using Today
Introduction
The release of Next.js 15 marks another significant milestone in the React ecosystem. While previous versions introduced paradigm shifts like the App Router, Next.js 15 focuses on stability, refinement, and giving developers more control over how their applications behave.
For many, shifting from Next.js 12 or 13 to the latest version can feel daunting. But the improvements in caching, rendering strategies, and server components are well worth the upgrade. Here are the top 5 features that will change how you build web apps.
1. React Server Components (RSC) by Default
In the App Router (Next.js 13+ and solidified in 15), every component is a Server Component by default.
Why it matters
Traditionally, React components were "Client Components" – they ran in the browser. This meant shipping large JavaScript bundles to the user.
- Zero Bundle Size: Server Components don't add to your JavaScript bundle. The code stays on the server; only the HTML is sent to the client.
- Direct Database Access: You can fetch data directly inside your component without
useEffector external API calls.
// This runs only on the server async function UserProfile({ id }: { id: string }) { const user = await db.user.findUnique({ where: { id } }); return ( <div> <h1>{user.name}</h1> <p>{user.email}</p> </div> ); }
2. Turbocharged Dynamic Rendering
One of the pain points in earlier versions was the "static by default" behavior sometimes causing confusion. Next.js 15 makes dynamic rendering more intuitive.
If you use a dynamic function (like cookies(), headers(), or searchParams), Next.js 15 automatically opts the route into Dynamic Rendering.
You can also enforce it explicitly:
export const dynamic = 'force-dynamic'; export default function Page() { return <h1>This page is always rendered fresh!</h1>; }
This removes the guesswork of "why is my page serving old data?".
3. The New Caching Rules: "Caches are Temporary"
This is perhaps the biggest change for developers upgrading from Next.js 13.4/14. The aggressive caching defaults (that sometimes made it hard to show fresh data) have been tuned.
fetchRequests: By default,fetchrequests are no longer cached indefinitely unless you explicitly ask for it.- GET Route Handlers: Are no longer cached by default.
To cache data, you now opt-in:
// Cache this request for 1 hour fetch('https://api.example.com/data', { next: { revalidate: 3600 } });
This "fetch fresh by default" approach aligns much better with standard web expectations.
4. Server Actions (Stable)
Server Actions are now stable and they are a game changer for form handling and mutations.
Instead of creating a separate API route (/api/submit), you can write a function that executes on the server and call it directly from your form.
// actions.ts 'use server' export async function createUser(formData: FormData) { const name = formData.get('name'); await db.user.create({ data: { name } }); } // Component.tsx import { createUser } from './actions'; export default function Register() { return ( <form action={createUser}> <input name="name" /> <button type="submit">Sign Up</button> </form> ) }
5. Partial Prerendering (PPR) - Experimental but Powerful
While still experimental in 15, Partial Prerendering is the direction the web is heading. It combines the best of Static Site Generation (SSG) and Server-Side Rendering (SSR).
Imagine a page where the navbar and footer are static (instant load), but the user feed is dynamic (streaming). PPR allows you to deliver the static shell immediately while streaming in the dynamic parts in the same request.
Conclusion
Next.js 15 might not have the "shock value" of the initial App Router launch, but its improvements to caching and developer experience (DX) make it the most polished version yet.
If you are still holding back on updating because of the "caching hell" stories from version 13, now is the perfect time to jump in. The water is fine, and the performance is incredible.
